Was Jesus Nice?

by Steve Ray on June 15, 2011

People often criticize us if we speak the truth or step on someone’s toes — usually if we are honest about sin or bad conduct.

Jesus was loving and kind. He would never . . .

Wait, was Jesus nice? How does “nice” relate to “love”?

A few weeks ago I ran to the Western Wall where the Temple once stood. It is the place where one of the stories took place.

Fr. Benedict Groeschel, while making a similar point, once pointed out that the word “nice” does not appear in Bible.

I remember Father Benedict Groeschel explaining once that “nice” came from the Latin word for “ignorant”. He went on to explain that gentlemanly behavior was more a product of the nose-in-the-air, English culture than it is the product of the culture that Jesus came from. He said Jesus was many things: Stern, loving, truthful, honest… ..but that he was never “nice”.
